Matthew is a genius

Since I am planning on printing this blog at some point for posterity's sake, I thought I should put a note in about how smart Matthew is. He has always been a really bright kid. He spoke early, walked early, played sports early, counted early, etc. But Matt and I have recently been blown away by his math abilities. About a year ago he started doing some simply math (like if we have 4 and we get another one, how many do we have?). But in the last six months he has started figuring out a lot of other things on his own. And he picks up on stuff so quickly like when one of his teachers was counting by 10s one day and Matthew thought it was great. He could do it perfectly from there on. He started adding harder numbers on his own and wants me to ask him math questions. Then he started figuring out that when he is so old, how old everyone else in the family will be. Then he started subtracting harder numbers. Then he started multiplying on his own (he would say to me three threes is nine, or four fives is 20). Then today Matt was talking to Matthew and somehow the question of 1-3 came up and Matthew told him negative 2! We were like WHAT?! I know I mentioned negative numbers to him once a while ago when he asked me what was less than zero, but we haven't talked to him at all about addition or subtraction in negatives! Don't get me wrong, I don't think he is perfect or anything (he still can't really even draw stick people), but he is pretty amazing! The crazy thing is that he started doing all of these things on his own. What can I say? For a person with a math minor (yes, me) that makes me pretty proud!

Hey, i just came over from Loralee Packard Latham's blog. Do you happen to know Aimee Beecroft...she was my mission companion in the MTC...she is from Snowflake AZ (like all the rest of the Beecrofts) If you do know her, will you please tell her to come and see my blog and give me her e-mail address so that I can get back in touch? Thanks.

He certainly is! When he visited at Christmas, he had no trouble doing math with my first and second graders.

I have to admit at first I was thinking, "He can't be smarter than Emma! She's already reading and adding and subtracting!" (I'm a typical mom), but reading that ... I am IMPRESSED! Counting in tens and multiplication is AMAZING!

It was great to get in touch with you guys again--I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you--you may have read we've been a little swamped. Sorry we missed the wedding--I'm sure if we would have known everyone would be there we would have tried harder to go. Marc doesn't have much time off yet, though. Tell Matt hi from us and keep on blogging--you're on my list!

That is awesome Kyla! Taylor loves Math too, and I have some great Math websites on my blog if you want to check them out! :) I'm constantly trying to keep him busy with new skills to learn, and his gifted teacher gave me these websites, they are really fun but also challenge them too. Do you ever just wonder what they're going to do with their genius when they get older???

That is the best. One of my best friends in AZ has a husband that is a Rocket Scientist...she said her hubby did stuff like that when he was young. Now I have a boy genius nephew! Tell Matthew "You Rock!" from all of us.
