David took us around Philadelphia after we picked him up. We saw some of the historical sites (original congress chambers, liberty bell) as well as some people and places (the church, the best cheese steak place) important to David personally. Jared even ran up the Rocky steps (he is in the gray sweatshirt). Philly is an interesting city. We enjoyed seeing the murals everywhere (David said they were done for city beautification).
We also took a trip to the PJs and visited a family living in one of two huge apartment buildings right next to each other. David said there were like 360 homicides the previous year in those two towers alone. It is one of the most dangerous places to live in the US. As we went up to visit Claudia, we got a few funny looks (all of us white people with the Elder). Andrew kept asking "What is that smell?" and held his elephant (Elly) over his nose. Needless to say, we had a quick lesson on manners before we got into the apartment. Once in the apartment, Owen (who loves bugs) spent the time chasing around cockroaches yelling, "Ant! Ant!" Even I was a little distracted as I tried to keep tabs on the roach climbing just above my head on the wall. It was all worth it though. Claudia is a fantastic person and I was glad to meet her. And, I can always tell Andrew and Owen a great story when they get older.
All in all, it was a great day, especially because we got to spend it with David!
